Minister Plato condemns shooting of Mitchell’s Plain officer

Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

I strongly condemn the shooting of Warrant Officer Herman Prince in Mitchell’s Plain yesterday and I am relieved to learn that he is recovering in hospital.

I commend the South African Police Service for their swift response in apprehending four suspects for questioning a mere two hours after the incident.

To those who dare to challenge the SAPS and put the safety of the people of this province in jeopardy – you will be caught and you will have your day in court. I encourage the parents, siblings, family, friends and neighbours to speak out against the criminals in their midst. You are not protecting them if you keep quiet - you are only incriminating yourself as an accomplice.

This brazen attack, in broad daylight, in full view of the police officer’s granddaughter and in total disregard for both their lives, warrants that those responsible face the full might of the law.

This crime cannot go unpunished.

I trust that the SAPS will continue with their full investigation and call on communities across the province to assist the police.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility and we all have to help safeguard our brave men and women in blue who risk their lives on a daily basis to keep criminals off the streets and our communities safe.
