Twenty-Four Arrested for Drinking and Driving This Weekend

Five people died on Western Cape roads this weekend in two separate crashes.

A man and his female passenger died in a crash in George on Sunday (12 July 2015). A man and his two male passengers died in a crash on the Stellenbosch Arterial Road on Sunday.

Twenty-four people were arrested for alleged drunken driving during 1 700 screenings for drunken drivers. The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Vredenburg at 1.61 mg/1 000ml, which was six times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

This weekend’s (10 and 11 July 2015) 23 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 516 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

A total of 9 190 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 1089 speeding offences were recorded.  Two hundred and forty-six (246) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 279 150.

Highest Speeds Recorded

  • 179 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 137 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the R27 in the Vredenburg service area.
  • 120 km/h in a 80 km/h zone on the R27 in the Vredenburg service area

Four Other Arrests

  • 1 x False Documents (Caledon).
  • 1 x False Documents (George).
  • 1 x Good Overload Arrest (Somerset-west ).
  • 1 x Bribery Arrest (Worcester).
