Hout Bay murder – SAPS’ swift response welcomed

13 July 2015

Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

I welcome the swift action by the South African Police Service (SAPS) that led to the arrest of three suspects in connection with the Murder of Nchikala Ngoy in Hout Bay last week.

The court appearance of the three today, less than a week since the murder, shows that there is no tolerance for crime and that SAPS will work diligently to ensure criminals face their day in court.

The recent murder of a doorman at a popular Long Street restaurant and bar saw similar swift action by the SAPS in apprehending suspects followed shortly by the suspects appearing in court.

I urge the SAPS to continue the investigations of all murder cases to ensure that sufficient evidence supports the court procedures which will help ensure convictions for the crimes the suspects are accused of.

I call on communities to assist the police in their investigations as convictions, supported with sufficient evidence sourced from communities, are crucial in getting criminals off our streets.

I have visited the site where the murder took place in Hout Bay last week and listened to the concerns of the local community members. Yesterday I visited the grieving family and friends of Mr Ngoy to extend my condolences and listened to their challenges and concerns. All of these I am raising with the SAPS and other relevant authorities with operational powers in an effort to prevent crime in the area going forward.

As part of the my oversight mandate over policing in the province, I have today tasked the Department of Community Safety’s Watching Briefs unit to monitor these court cases to ensure that justice is served.

I will continue to support the SAPS in their difficult task of safeguarding our communities and ask every person living in this province to join us in taking a united stand against crime.
