Twenty-three Arrested for Drinking and Driving This Weekend

Three pedestrians were killed on Western Cape roads this weekend. Two drivers and one passenger were also killed in separate crashes.

The pedestrians were all male. One died near Bothasig in Cape Town, one in Darling and one near Worcester.

Twenty-three people were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. Six other arrests were made.

A pedestrian was arrested for being drunk. One arrest was made for the alleged possession of dagga, one for alleged bribery, and one for alleged reckless driving. Two drivers who had their vehicles impounded were also arrested. The impoundments took place near Somerset West and Oudtshoorn.

This weekend’s (3 and 4 July) 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 233 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

A total of 1 127 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West at 1.39 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 8 060 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 633 speeding offences were recorded.  Two hundred and ten (210) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 303 300.

Highest Speed Recorded

  • 178 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
