Khayelitsha Learners Proudly Excel in Mother Tongue Reading and Spelling

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) hosted the Siyazingca Reading Competition and Spelling Bee on Friday, 19 June 2015. The event took place in Harare, Khayelitsha in celebration of Youth Month.

Participants came from four Khayelitsha schools: Isiphiwo Primary (host), as well as Luleka Primary, Ludwe Ngamlana Primary and St Michaels Primary. The competition aimed to improve isiXhosa language skills and promote the enjoyment of reading for pleasure.

Grade 5 learners read extracts of Esona Sona Sidlo by Sindiwe Magona, those in Grade 6 read Mhla uGogo Waya Kuvota by Elinor Sisulu, and those in Grade 7 read Ungawudeli Umqulu Iiyadi Ungazibalanga by N Tsoeu. Participants were assessed on their reading and their ability to spell certain isiXhosa words.

Organiser Beaulla Stofile of DCAS Language Services said siyazingca means “we are proud”, and this is precisely how she felt at the end of event. “Reading is essential, it provides access to culture and cultural heritage and it empowers people,” she said. Competition was tight, but Isiphiwo Primary School claimed victory in all three grade categories.

DCAS supports the development of previously marginalised languages in the Western Cape through after-school reading clubs and initiatives such as competitions. The people of the province are enthusiastically embracing these opportunities to develop their mother tongues BETTER TOGETHER.
