Twenty Arrested for Drinking and Driving This Weekend

On 12 and 13 June 2015, 25 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 624 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Two drivers were arrested for excessive speeding in Mossel Bay, while three road traffic fatalities were reported this weekend.

A total of 1 728 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 20 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West at 1.29 mg/1 000ml, which was six times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 12 879 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 1 629 speeding offences were recorded.  A total of 227 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 267 150.

Highest Speeds Recorded

  • 189 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N2 in the Mossel Bay service area.
  • 159 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Mossel Bay service area.
  • 102 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna and Swellendam service area.

Five Arrests

  • Two excessive speed arrests in Mossel Bay (189 km/h in a 120 km/h zone) and (159 km/h in 100 km/h zone).
  • One bribery and corruption arrest in Worcester.
  • One drunken pedestrian arrest in Swellendam.
  • One illegal Immigrant arrest in Worcester.

Three Road Traffic Fatalities Reported
