Department Conducts Successful Learner Transport Blitz in De Doorns

12 June 2015

A number of transport operators in De Doorns came in for a surprise this week.

Provincial traffic inspectors conducted a learner transport blitz at two sites in the area to ensure learners travel safely to and from school, and that drivers had the necessary authorisation to transport them.

This operation was one of many conducted by the Department of Transport and Public Works during Youth Month and throughout the year. Operators transporting learners are legally required to comply with the provisions of the National Land Transport Act. Their vehicles must be roadworthy and they must have all the necessary permits to transport learners.

During the operation on 11 June 2015, privately contracted vehicles transporting learners to and from the Bonne Esperance Primary School and Hexvallei Secondary School were checked for roadworthiness, appropriate documents, professional driving permits, driving licences, overloading and driver fitness. At least four bus operators received summonses for various defects, while the permit of a minibus taxi driver was suspended because of his un-roadworthy vehicle. Fines amounting to a total of R18 000 were issued to offenders.

Almont May, principal at Hexvallei Secondary, said the safety of learners is a high priority. “We are delighted that provincial traffic law interventions are being implemented to ensuring that learner transport is safe and reliable. I hope that operators will take the necessary steps to sort out their documentation,” he said.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said traffic inspectors will be conducting similar operations on the monthly basis, with emphasis on the Department’s monthly road safety themes.
