Premier Zille to Attend Road Safety Workshop

26 May 2015

Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape will attend the eighth Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and Safely Home Road Safety Workshop on 27 May 2015 at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch, Cape Town.

With the winter season upon us, the workshop theme for this month is Visibility. Inadequate visibility increases the risk of a road crash for all types of road users, although the focus will be on the most vulnerable, including:

  • Motor-cyclists
  • Cyclists
  • Pedestrians
  • Children

More than 17 000 South Africans are killed on our roads each year, including nearly 3 000 children. Another 68 000 people are seriously injured. These deaths and injuries are preventable, and are costing the country more than 8% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per annum.

Attendees will learn more about how they and the communities they represent and interact with can also play a role in saving lives and preventing serious injuries.
