On 20 April 2015, Thabo Tutu, Director of Sport Promotion in the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), handed over R725 000 to the West Coast District Sport Council. The handover event took place in Vredenburg.

The grant includes support for seven major events scheduled to take place in the district during the 2015/16 financial year. The council will also distribute funds to its 13 affiliated sport federations for major events, development, transformation, administration and capacity building.

The event was attended by Saldanha Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Ald. Francois Schippers, representatives of various West Coast District municipalities as well as representatives of affiliated sport federations.

At the event, Sport and Recreation South Africa (the national department) handed over equipment to 10 West Coast clubs to assist them to grow their sports, unearth new talent and become more competitive.

Ald. Schippers expressed his gratitude to DCAS for its ongoing support. He said that the Department’s funding will help sport federations to grow to new heights and develop top athletes.

“At DCAS we are actively supporting development and transformation as an essential part of sport excellence,” said Tutu.

Through its partnerships with sport councils and sport federations, DCAS offers people of the Western Cape the opportunity to hone their sporting skills and grow their talent. Let us create an active and fit province BETTER TOGETHER.
