Three Fatalities on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

On 10 and 11 April 2015, 21 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 162 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

Three people, including two pedestrians, died on the province’s roads.

A total of 1 175 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 20 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset west at 1.42 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 6 054 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 889 speeding offences were recorded.

A total of 208 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 243 650.

Highest Speeds Recorded

• 184 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
• 144 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
• 122 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.

One Other Arrest

• 1 x Goods overload arrest in Beaufort West.
