Disgraceful: Criminals rob Medics trying to Save Girl’s Life
Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety
It is an absolute disgrace that criminals in Khayelitsha have robbed at gunpoint, three medics in an ER24 ambulance that were in the middle of trying to save a young girl’s life.
I simply have no words to describe the complete and utter lack of humanity displayed by these individuals who could have caused the death of a young girl simply because they placed a higher value on cell phones than somebody’s life.
Media reports state that “The paramedics were busy in the ambulance stabilising the little girl when one of the doors flung open and a gun [was] pointed at them.”
Thankfully the medics didn’t resist and were able to continue stabilising the young girl despite being robbed during the middle of responding to an emergency call out.
This type of behaviour sends the wrong message to private companies like ER24 who provide a valuable community service but will be less willing to respond to emergency call outs in areas in which they have been robbed and attacked.
Safety needs the whole of society to work together; we cannot let individuals like the criminals involved in this incident dictate how we should live our lives.
I am asking anyone with information on the two criminals to please report it to the local police stations in Khayelitsha or directly to my office on 021 483 4332.
