MOD students add colour to Cape Town Carnival

70 pupils from three city high schools, who are part of the Mass participation Opportunity and access Development (MOD) programme – Lavender Hill High, Phoenix High and Oscar Mpetha High (who included four seniors from Walter Teka Primary School) –, took part in the festivities at this year’s Cape Town Carnival.

The MOD Programme is one of the flagship initiatives of the Western Cape Government. It is central to the vision of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), namely, to create a socially inclusive, creative and active Western Cape.

The theme this year was “Elemental” and these pupils took part in the space portion of the parade. Rehearsals for the parade began in October and it is safe to say that these teens stole the show on Saturday.

“Seeing the joy and pleasure in the eyes of every learner left us feeling fulfilled and inspired to do it all again,” said Anthony Lottering, from DCAS Sport Development. “They made their schools and the MOD programme proud, and their joint performance was undoubtedly second to none.  Ultimately they enjoyed and displayed the results of hard work and diligence.”

“We are very proud of this group of learners and the commitment and dedication they have shown to this project,” said Anton Bredell, acting minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport. “We hope that their participation has contributed to their personal development.”

The MOD programme offers young people the opportunity to become involved in safe and productive activities after school hours. Parents and teachers should encourage them to participate. Let us help our youth to succeed BETTER TOGETHER.
