On 27 and 28 February 2015, 25 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 472 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Twenty-one people, 10 of whom are pedestrians, died on the province’s roads.
A total of 1 183 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 27 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in George at 1.25 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 48 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 48 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 290 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R336 300.
