Department of Transport and Public Works Recognises Long Service Achievements

18 February 2015

Nine staff members from the West Coast region were recognised for completing 10 years’ service with the Department of Transport of Public Works.

The awards were presented by the Chief Director of Road Network Management Mr Lenn Fourie at a ceremony at the regional District Roads Engineer (DRE) office in Ceres on 17 February 2015.

Mr Fourie said all recipients made a positive contribution to the Department, mainly in the road planning, design, construction and maintenance fields.

“The Western Cape boasts quality road infrastructure and recipients have contributed to uphold those standards. We are proud of their loyal service and dedication,” he said.

Recipients were proud of their achievements. Petro Steenkamp (40) from Vanrhynsdorp joined the Department as a general worker in 2004. He has since been promoted to junior road worker supervisor and is looking forward to possible 20 more years at the Department.

“I’m a proud public servant who is thankful for what the Department has done for me over the years. I was able to obtain my code 10 vehicle licence, which assisted me greatly,” he said.

Lena Tromp (46) from Calvinia joined the Department as a cleaner in 2004. She has since been promoted to Office Assistant. With limited education, she has made the most of the opportunities presented to her. She is now working towards her matric qualification at Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET).

“To be working 10 years at the Department was something I never expected. I’m a humble public servant today,” she said.

The Cape Winelands regional Long Service Awards ceremony will take place at the DRE office in Paarl on 24 February 2015.
