Five Road Users Killed on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

On 6 and 7 February 2015, 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 3 082 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Five people, of whom four were pedestrians, died on the province’s road.

A total of 1 751 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 33 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Vredenburg at 1.19 mg/1 000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 8 746 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 722 speeding offences were recorded.

Two hundred and sixty three (263) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 278 600.

Highest Speeds Recorded

• 174 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
• 135 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Swellendam service area.
• 99 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.
• 78 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N7 in the Vredendal service area.

Seven Other Arrests

• 1 x Possession of illegal substances Arrest (Caledon)
• 1 x Hindering traffic officer in execution of duties (Swellendam)
• 1 x Dagga Arrest (Beaufort West)
• 2 x Drunk pedestrians Arrest (Vredendal)
• 1 x Illegal grape seller Arrest (Worcester)
• 1 x Reckless and negligent driving (Worcester)

Five Fatalities Reported

Greater Cape Metropolitan area:

• Parow – 1 Pedestrian
• Kraaifontein – 1 Pedestrian
• Diep River – 1 Pedestrian

Winelands/Overberg:

• Hermanus – 1 Pedestrian

West Coast:

• Klawer – 1 Passenger
