Recognition of Traffic Service Excellence
The Department of Transport and Public Works is highly appreciative of the outstanding act of courage that Traffic Officers William Mbolekwa, Lunga Qampi and Noluntu Hanese displayed at about 3:00 on Friday morning, 21 November 2014. The officers apprehended two suspects in a bakkie on the N2 near Sasol Garage, George and confiscated illegal abalone worth R3 million.
This event is a notable success in the Western Cape Government’s fight against the poaching, smuggling and transportation of illegal abalone. Because stocks of this shellfish have fallen so low that the species is threatened with extinction, all abalone fishing has been suspended in 2008.
A message from Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa to these courageous officials reads as follows: “I wish you well in your career as you continue to serve in the Department, constantly striving to rid all communities in the province from the evil of drugs, the possession of illegal goods as well as reckless behaviour on our roads. The commitment that led to this arrest is an example of what is expected from all traffic officers. I hope that your bravery will encourage other officials to be vigilant all the time while they are going about their daily law enforcement routines.”
