EPWP beneficiaries graduate from Artscape technical training in stage practice

26 November 2014

Seven beneficiaries of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) successfully completed the Artscape technical stage practice training course on 24 November 2014. This project is part of the collaboration between the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and the Artscape Opera House to implement the Environmental and Culture Sector EPWP in the Western Cape.

Kobus Rossouw, Head of the Artscape Technical Training Academy, designed and coordinated the training. The course has SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) accreditation through the University of Stellenbosch (NQF Level 6 in Theatre Skills). Over a period of eight months, students completed practical assignments by providing technical support to no less than 17 professional stage productions. These ranged from an intimate one-person show at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown to a full-scale four-act opera at Artscape.

Shayna Gleave, one of the beneficiaries, said, “Over the course of 2014, the training has provided me with practical experience to expand my knowledge as a theatre practitioner. From the classroom to the stage, I have developed skills that will help me begin my career in the arts industry. It has been an amazing journey, shared with incredible mentors, trainers and peers. I will cherish this experience for life.”

Five of the seven beneficiaries have been offered jobs at Artscape and the others are pursuing their own interests. DCAS would like to congratulate these students on their achievement and helping us make the arts better together.
