Top Athletes Honoured at Boland Sports Awards

21 November 2014

The outstanding achievements of top athletes, young and old, from the Boland region were given well deserved recognition at the Boland Sports Awards held at Rhebokskloof Wine Estate on 20 November. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with the Cape Winelands District Municipality and Boland Sports Council, hosted the event to showcase athletes from the region.

During his speech, Executive Mayor of Cape Winelands, Alderman Neels De Bruyn quoted the late Nelson Mandela, saying that sport has the power to inspire and unite people in a way that little else does. ‘Sport creates many opportunities for people who may not have had any before and contributes to nation building.’ he said.

Chief Director for Sport and Recreation, Adv Lyndon Bouah said that from this event, winners will be nominated for the Provincial Sports Awards.  He also said that is a month to acknowledge the administrators, athletes, coaches and community builders that are involved in sport. ‘The vision of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is to be a socially creative, active and connected Western Cape’ he said.

A representative for the winners of the Team of Year, Annerie Schreeder said ‘Team effort and a lot of hard work contributed to us winning this award’.

The next sports awards ceremony will take place on  28 November, and will recognise the achievements of athletes from the Metro region. DCAS and its partners support these athletes in their goals, and aims to provide them with the necessary support to continue to excel at sports in the Western Cape.
