Sector achievements celebrated at second Sector Connect event

31 October 2014

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, addressed members of the Western Cape’s key sectors on their importance in the province’s economy on 23 October 2014.

The second annual Sector Connect event aims to showcase and celebrate the past successes and future endeavours of the Sector Development Programme and its partners, the Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs). It also brings together business, government, embassies and academia under one roof to form even deeper and more meaningful linkages across the various sectors within the Western Cape.

The Western Cape Government and City's Sector Programme, has been a central pillar of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism’s offering, and incorporates a range of implementing agencies in the form of special purpose vehicles.  This spans a range of sectors, including manufacturing, resource-based, services and green economy.

The Trade and Sector Development Programme within the Department has built up a reputation as the leading programme of its kind in South Africa, and has been recognised globally for the practical application of economic development tools such as the use of the cluster methodology, with the establishment, facilitation and on-going oversight over the key sector bodies or SPVs. The Sector Programme and partners like Wesgro and the Economic Development Partnership, work to strengthen the regional economy, and improve the growth trajectories of many of our priority industries. They do this through the development of meaningful long term partnerships across industry, government and academia. This has built up a base of more than 5 000 member firms, and has led to the facilitation of major trade and investment deals, the upgrading of firms, the development of innovative sectoral skills programmes, and the spin-out of a range of mega-projects.
