28 October 2014

The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, celebrated the Western Province Rugby team’s Currie Cup victory over the Golden Lions  in a celebratory procession which started at the iconic Cape Town City Hall on 28 October 2014 on an open-top bus.

Hundreds of proud Capetonians came out to show their support and celebrate with the Western Province players. Fans even had an opportunity to get their favourite rugby player’s autograph. Minister Mbombo addressed a cheering crowd and said ”On behalf of the Western Cape Government we would like to thank you for bringing the Currie Cup home again”.

Thelo Wakefield, President of the Western Cape Rugby Union, said: “This cup belongs to all of you.” and also thanked Minister Mbombo for her support. Loose forward Nizaam Carr addressed the crowd on behalf of the team and thanked each and every one for their support “You are each a part of our success” said Carr.

Liefie Mostert from Plumstead, a die-hard supporter, donned her blue and white Western Province colours and came out to celebrate with the team. “I attended every rugby match played at Newlands, and I needed to be here today, these boys really make me proud.” she said.

The bus also took the players with the cup through Mitchells Plain and Gugulethu. Let us unite and continue supporting all our provincial sports men, women and teams as they compete at a national and international level.
