Minister Plato Saddened and Angered as Yet Another Officer Slain

16 October 2014

Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

I am deeply saddened and extremely angered to have learned that yet another of the province’s bravest men in blue have been shot in cold blood in Khayelitsha today.

The 37-year-old officer was busy with an investigation when he was shot and succumbed to his wounds in hospital.

My deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and colleagues of the slain officer.

We need to root out the evil in our communities who attack those who are there to protect and serve.

I commend the swift action by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in apprehending a suspect and trust that a thorough investigation will lead to a conviction and prosecution. I trust the law will take its course and justice will be served.

The Western Cape Department of Community Safety and National Police Management are united behind the SAPS and I call on communities to respect the police, to work with them and to ensure that we all stand as a united force in protecting those who protect us.
