Coming Together at the Metropole Youth Camp

28 August 2014

A total of 94 youths from Kraaifontein, Langa and other Cape Town communities, attended the Metropole Youth Camp at High Africa in Worcester from 22–24 August 2014. The event was one of four regional camps in the Western Cape which will culminate in a provincial camp to be held in October.

The camps are part of a national initiative to promote nation building, leadership and social cohesion by supporting youth to become responsible, conscious South Africans. Youths selected to take part in the 2014 youth camps all over the country are all part of the “born free” generation. “Born frees” are the young men and women who were born in 1994, the year that South Africa finally became a democracy.

The youth invited to the Metropole Youth Camp were mostly second year students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Mowbray College and other tertiary education institutions. They participated in a range of activities from physical activities, to team work, to group discussions.

Group discussions facilitated by LoveLife representatives assisted participants to get to know themselves better, to understand the power of working in a team, and to develop leadership skills. According to Khaya Mlandu of LoveLife, “You need to know yourself and how to communicate with others. You need to be able to listen to others to be able to communicate efficiently”.

Physical activities included kayaking, wall climbing and the “leap of faith”. These activities were both exciting and instructive. They taught the youths how to work together as a team, and the importance of trusting one another.

Over the same weekend, regional youth camps took place in Riebeeck West (West Coast) and Knysna (South Western Districts). The Boland youth camp will take place from 29–31 August. A total of 300 youths will be selected from the four regional camps to participate in the Western Cape provincial youth camp to take place in Tulbagh from 5–11 October.

Most of the young people who attended the Cape Metropole youth camp said they were grateful for the opportunity. One of the best things about the camp was that participants were able to make new friends from a variety of the Western Cape’s cultural communities.
