Excellence at Oudtshoorn Sport Festival

30 June 2014

Sport teams representing various sport codes are participating in the Oudtshoorn Sport Festival, taking place from 26 June to 5 July 2014. This festival, hosted for the fourth time, is supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), the Oudtshoorn Municipality and the Sport Council.

Over the weekend, hundreds of sport teams competed in various codes – soccer, netball, chess, table tennis, gymnastics, golf, karate, action cricket, cycling and indigenous games. The action took place at different venues across the town.

Many athletes who took part in the weekend’s events had a memorable experience, competing against opponents from different regions. Some of them travelled long distances to be at the Festival. Cyclist Andrea Moos (16) from George said it was exciting to compete in a challenging race. “I’ve had fun, made many friends and loved every moment of it.”

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Nomafrench Mbombo fired the gun at the starting point of the historic Western Cape Road Cycling Championships. She also visited the various netball and chess events. ”It was exciting to see so many youth competing for top honours. The festival showed that sport is alive and well in the region,” Minister Mbombo said.

The partners are committed to ensuring that the festival is a celebration of South Africa's status as an active and winning sports nation.
