Olympics for Employers and Employees

9 June 2014

The 3rd Cape Town Corporate Games from 5 to 7 June 2014 were filled with action and memorable moments, as Western Cape Government 2013 Better Together Games winners participated in a selection of fun sporting activities.

It was the first time that South African Government institutions participated in the multi-sport festival, hosted by the V&A Waterfront. Out of the 33 participating organisations, Team Western Cape finished in an impressive 2nd place as well as winning the Sport Championship Award. Sanlam won the event, continuing its dominance in the Games. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) netball team won gold, while Deon Pick (Western Cape Education Department) and Michael James and Amini Duad (DCAS) all starred in the chess event.

Groote Schuur Hospital employee Ishaam Ismail, who played in the soccer 5s, said although his team didn’t win many games, members enjoyed interacting on a sporting and social level. “We’ve create many happy moments here today.” Adv. Lyndon Bouah of DCAS said the Games demonstrated the importance of the internal social cohesion that DCAS Minister Nomafrench Mbombo had earlier referred to. “These Games promote good staff morale and speak to the practice of wellness that our department is committed to.”

Nicole Visser of Cape Town Corporate Games thanked participants for their willingness to compete in a relaxed environment and engage in friendly rivalry. “You understand the value of healthier and fitter lifestyles at home as well as in the workplace. We look forward to seeing you again next year.”

The Cape Town Corporate Games encouraged healthier lifestyles and healthy spirit on the day. The men and women of business and government got the opportunity to take their teams out of the office and onto the sports field. This indeed expressed meaning to this year’s theme, “Get Fit For Business”.
