Conference Improves Women and Girls’ Sport Development

12 May 2014

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) partnered with the Provincial Women and Girls Committee of the Western Cape Sport Confederation to host the inaugural Provincial Women in Sport Coaches’ Conference in Riebeek West on 9 and 10 May 2014. With the theme, To Enhance the Capacity of Women Coaches, the conference focused on coaching in netball, rugby and sport for the disabled.

Keynote speakers on the day included Sharon Siljeur of the Western Province Sports Council and Zelda Hansen, who shared her experience as Assistant Coach of the London 2012 Paralympic Team. Head swimming coach at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Cedrick Fisch, and national softball player, Zeona Dearham, also spoke about the advancement and empowerment of women and girls in sport.

There was a strong sense of camaraderie between attendees as pertinent concerns and challenges were addressed. Agnetha Jeftha of DCAS Sport Promotion says the conference achieved its aim. “Coaches were capacitated to stand firm and ensure that breakthrough is made within their sporting codes, where women will be coaching and leading this process,” she said.

In closing, attendees were encouraged to make use of top women athletes to support sustainable growth in women and girls’ sport in the province and become proud future national coaches.
