DCAS supports Mandela Trilogy showcase

17 April 2014
The Mandela Trilogy, a unique musical tribute to the memory of one of the world’s most inspiring leaders, will be presented by Cape Town Opera with support from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). This three-part showcase of song and dance is part of the Western Cape Government’s 20 Years of Freedom and Democracy Programme

A full dress rehearsal will be taking place at the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone this Saturday, 19 April 2014. Learners from various disadvantaged schools, local choral societies and charities as well as the public will have the opportunity to see the rehearsal. In June 2014, the show will be performed in the Deutsche Theatre in Munich.

The first act is an oratorio in isiXhosa, the second is a jazz musical, and the third is an opera. Audiences will be on the edges of their seats as star performers tell tales of Madiba’s life through song and dance. The trip to Germany will give expression to the cultural component of the 1995 bilateral agreement between the regional governments of the Western Cape and the Free State of Bavaria

According to Louise Enslin, fundraiser for Cape Town Opera, “The funding provided by DCAS will assist immensely with the costs of travelling to Germany.” She said this would be a fantastic opportunity for leading South African performers to stand on the international stage.

A message by Minister Dr Ivan Meyer included in the programme for the Germany performance of the Mandela Trilogy taking place on the 4 June 2014.
