Earth Hour 2014

Earth Hour is a World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) initiative that started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when 2.2 million households turned off their lights for one hour to make a stand against climate change. For the past seven years, on the last Saturday of March, millions of people around the world have switched off their lights for Earth Hour as a symbolic gesture to show their commitment to taking positive actions for our planet. Today, Earth Hour is a growing international movement of citizen-driven action for saving the environment.

In 2014, Earth Hour will be celebrated on Saturday, 29 March 2014 from 20:30 to 21:30. This year the theme is "How do you honour the Earth?" which is centred on a powerful call to action.

What Contribution can I Make?

WWF South Africa is asking you to make a promise to honour the Earth by thinking about the choices we make around our food, water and energy use, and our impact on the environment. The power of choice is in our hands through our everyday commitments and consumer preferences. Create your promise to honour the Earth, show your commitment to the planet by spreading the word of Earth Hour and celebrate in true spirit on 29 March 2014. Together we can leave a legacy of flourishing ecosystems, healthy rivers, and abundant flora and wildlife.

South Africa's Earth Hour Capital

Cape Town has been selected as South Africa’s Earth Hour Capital in recognition of the city’s actions to address climate change. The title is awarded as part of the global Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC), which aims to highlight and reward cities that are prepared to make substantial long-term efforts to combat climate change.
