109km of Memories for Development Cyclists

Despite the windy conditions, cyclists linked to the Nedbank Sports Trust Cycling Development Programme successfully completed the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Momentum Cycle Tour on 9 March 2014.

The programme is a partnership between Nedbank and the Sports Trust, supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). The programme creates opportunities for young cyclists to participate in competitions. The best of them may become the cycling champions of the future.

Team members in their distinctive green gear were cheered on by supporters who held up posters at the start of the race. For many, it was their first race, and seasoned cyclists were determined to improve on their previous times. Ronel Marron from Beacon Hill High School was proud to have finished this year’s race after not being able to finish last year. “This was my second race, and I really enjoyed it. I’ll always remember the experience of being able to finish.” Ferdi Vilander from Worcester and a member of the De Doorns Development Cycling Group said: “On the day I didn’t feel well, but I am glad that I finished the race under these circumstances.”

Justin Pasensie of DCAS Club Development said it was great to see the development cyclists being afforded an opportunity to participate in the Cycle Tour. Many of them come from rural areas like De Doorns and Piketberg and were pleased to experience the wonderful scenery of the Cape Peninsula. ”Together with the Sport Trust and Nedbank, we truly lived up to the slogan ‘make things happen’,” he said. “This kind of support can only inspire them to do greater things.”

The Nedbank Sports Trust Cycling Development Programme is hopeful that one day it will see one of its development cyclists winning the world’s largest individually timed cycling event.
