Khayelitsha Schools' Passion for Cricket

4 March 2014

The Minister of Sports and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) Fikile Mbalula, Australian High Commissioner to South Africa, Graeme Wilson and the Department of Sport and Cultural Affairs (DCAS) School Sport Deputy Director Claude Meyer recently visited the Khayelitsha Cricket Club for a coaching clinic ahead of the third test match between South Africa and Australia.

They were joined by former Protea players, Paul Adams, Ashwell Prince, Mondi Zondeki, Thami Tsolekile and cricket legend Peter Kirsten who lent their expertise to the excited learners from 10 Khayelitsha primary schools.

DCAS assisted the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) to transport learners to the event. “Events of this nature are important to promote cricket. This is a great occasion for learners to meet their heroes and be inspired. These men exemplify the ideal that DCAS is trying to impart – if you work hard you can achieve your goals,” said Meyer.
