Workshop Inspires Young Langa Musicians

10 March 2014

A group of young jazz musicians from Langa High School felt inspired after participating in a schools music and skills workshop on 8 March 2014. The event was the last of four training and development workshops hosted by ESP Afrika, producers of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF).

ESP Afrika and its partners concentrated on the importance of teamwork and taught the learners about stagecraft, stage management, budgeting, public relations, marketing and stage etiquette. The trainees are members of the Langa Music Development Project, led by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) with support for the employment of musicians provided by the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

The learners had a memorable experience and were grateful to have been able to participate. According to Langa High arts and culture teacher Nombulelo Ndlovu, “the workshop was very interesting. It taught us about stage and tech management and many other topics.” Excited Grade 12 learner Sibulele Makeleni (18) is hoping to use the skills she has learned to realise her dream of becoming a successful opera singer.

William Masemola of DCAS Arts and Culture said it’s important that music development takes place on all levels, and was pleased about the positive impact of the workshop on the lives of these talented young musicians from Langa.
