Exploring What it Means to be a Good Man

7 March 2014

What does it take to be a good man in South Africa today? Emerging director Thando Doni and five actors are exploring this key question in Passage, a new play which runs at the Baxter in Cape Town from 4 to 22 March 2014.

Passage has received support from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), Baxter Theatre Centre, Magnet Theatre and the Zabalaza Theatre Festival. The play has been presented to communities in Delft, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Fish Hoek and Robertson.

According to Doni, “through a process of workshopping, we considered violence and abuse against women and children; how men can take responsibility and stand their ground; the demands of society in terms of status; the lack of positive male role models in our society; and the lack of respect amongst men.”

By exploring these issues, the play is contributing to the development of positive and empowering ways of being a man. Passage is performed in English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, Sesotho and Sepedi. There is an age restriction of 12 years. Performances take place at 11:00 (for schools) and at 18:00 from 5 to 22 March, except on 8 March when the starting time is 20:00.

Tickets cost R80 and booking can be done through Computicket by phone on 0861 915 8000, online at www.computicket.com or in person at any Shoprite Checkers outlet.
