New-Look Togryers Museum Launched

21 January 2014

A new entrance, education centre, touch screen digital exhibition and installed ramps with a toilet for the disabled are some of the additions at the new-look Togryers Museum in Ceres. On Monday, 20 January 2014, the Museum opened its doors to the public after the completion of the upgrading and expansion phases.

The project, which took four months to complete, aims to promote nation building, social cohesion and the developing of social capital and economic development in the Witzenberg region. The National Lotteries Board of South Africa allocated R2 million to the Museum after a successful application. An additional amount of R557 000 had been received from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) to assist financially in this big project. The project was completed in partnership with the Department of Transport and Public Works, who provided professional services and handled the tender process.

Museum Manager Ms Bertdene Lauscher said the educational centre will be used as a conference facility. “This centre will enable learners to do research for school assignments.  All relevant historical information regarding the town and area will be accessible on computers,” she said. It will also be available to organisations and businesses to use for workshops, meetings and small conferences. Corporate companies in Ceres are expected to benefit as there is no proper conference facility available in the town.

The exhibition, “The Story of the Transport Rider”, was also launched by DCAS Minister Dr Ivan Meyer with the aim to keep the local history alive. Information on this theme was previously limited and no photo material was available, but visitors now have access to it. Minister Meyer said the exhibition will promote tourism, cultural warmth and celebrate the past with the present. “You can now touch the information and interact with it.”
