Hanover Park Community Health Centre Fortified Against Shooting

20 December 2013

Following a shooting incident at the Hanover Park Community Health Centre (CHC) in October this year, safety and security mechanisms have been installed to safeguard the facility. It is now a fortress in many ways.

Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, says: “Metal cladding has been installed and found to be impenetrable to direct fire from various hand weapons. Plating has been fitted to sliding entrance gates, while the surveillance camera installation is 60% complete. The installation of the steel protection fence is 90% completed. The two-metre high wall has been extended by 0.6 metre metal checked plate. The security guardhouse is also replaced. The cost to date is R635 000.”

Western Cape Government Health closed the facility temporarily in October after a shooting incident near the facility. A bullet passed through the wall of the facility manager’s office just missing the manager who was in her office at the time. Traumatised staff received counselling through the employee assistance programme.

Since the incident Western Cape Government Health’s security has been strengthened. “The staff members are relieved with the new changes and feel safe now that these security improvements have been brought on at the facility,” says Dr Tsepo Motsohi, Family Physician at Hanover Park CHC.
