Making a Difference in the Lives of Women Behind Bars

9 December 2013

On Wednesday, 27 November 2013, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) partnered with Breederivier Correctional Services and Koraal Women Network to host an event aimed at motivating and uplifting 220 women incarcerated at Worcester. Two days later, the partners provided a platform for the women to present their poetry, solo singing, group singing, drama and dance skills in a talent show.

These events coincided with the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign, observed this year between 25 November and 10 December.

Ms Agnetha Jeftha of DCAS said the 16 Days campaign highlights the way that gender-based violence undermines human dignity and self-worth. Referring to the Worcester correction facility events, she said: “the partners were able to remind these women of their self-worth and to help restore their self-confidence, even though they are behind bars.”
