City to host Inter-faith Service on Grand Parade

6 December 2013

The City of Cape Town will host an inter-faith service on the Grand Parade honouring former State President, Nelson Mandela, who passed away last night.

Religious leaders from various denominations will hold prayer vigils in order to create a dignified space in which residents can mourn the loss of Madiba and express their condolences. City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille, will deliver an address.

From 12:00 onwards, mourners will be given the opportunity to lay flowers and write messages in books of remembrance.

Date: 6 December 2013

Time: 17:00

Venue: Grand Parade, Darling Street, Cape Town

All media are welcome to attend.

The Grand Parade is an appropriate venue as it holds a special place in Mandela’s history. He delivered his freedom speech from the balcony of the City Hall overlooking the Grand Parade, just hours after his release from prison on 11 February 1990.

The Grand Parade will serve as a public gathering space and will be open every day until further notice.

Transport

Free transport will be made available for those wishing to attend the inter-faith service in the form of Metrorail, Golden Arrow Bus Services and MyCiTi bus services. This transport will be offered into town from 12:00 – 15:00 and leaving town from 19:00 until the end of the service.

All other services will run as normal and tariffs will apply.

There will be road closures in place around the Grand Parade – details of which will be communicated closer to the time.
