New R4,5 m Library for Nkqubela

A long-awaited dream came true for the 6 000 residents of Nkqubela in Robertson when their own public library opened on Monday, 25 October 2013. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) partnered with the Langeberg Municipality and the community to build the library at a cost of R4,5 m.

Learners from the Nkqubela Primary School and the Masakheke High School and many others are expected to benefit. About 4% of registered members of the Robertson library hail from Nkqubela. Until the opening of the new facility, members had to travel 7 km to the Robertson library, some of them on foot. Up to 75 Masakheke learners used the Robertson library every day after school to study and to do school projects.

The first library service in Nkqubela was rendered from a container with material from Biblionef, but a shortage of funding for staff meant the facility had to close in 2011. The need for a proper library was noted in the Langeberg Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan and an application for conditional grant assistance was duly submitted to the DCAS Library Service.

The new library will start with two dedicated computers to manage circulation and another five computer stations will provide free public internet access. Patrons will have access to 12 912 books worth almost R719 000. Two staff members will assist the public while a gardener and cleaner will ensure a neat and clean environment.

The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer said the library will enhance learning conditions in Nkqubela and provide stimulation and entertainment to residents. “This library is a programme of excellence through which people can stay connected to the world. It will open a new world of opportunities for this community.”

Executive Mayor of Langeberg Municipality Alderwoman Daniela Gagiano said that the people of Nkqubela can use the library as a gateway to information towards a better future.

A happy Rodine Filander (11) of Vergesig Primary School added that she will definitely visit the library with her friends to gain knowledge together. The partners are committed to create a culture of reading in this community, better together.
