Minister Meyer to Launch MOD Programme in Manenberg

9 October 2013

Western Cape Cultural Affairs and Sport Minister, Dr Ivan Meyer, will launch the Western Cape Government’s MOD Programme at six schools in Manenberg. There was a spike in gang violence in this area in recent months, which resulted in the City of Cape Town deploying extra Metro Police officers in the area as a temporary solution to try and stabilise the situation.

The Western Cape Government’s MOD centre programme is an after-school programme that is currently operational at 181 schools across the province. The MOD centres opening at six schools in Manenberg will provide learners with a safe place to participate in sports, arts and culture activities and to study between 2pm and 6pm every week day. Most importantly, the centres will provide learners with a sense of purpose and belonging and will assist in keeping them off the streets and away from gangs, alcohol and drugs.

Date: Wednesday, 09 October 2013
