Heritage Day celebrations in Bokmakierie

25 September 2013

Anti-gang programmes from Delft, Samora Machel, KTC, Nyanga East, Khayelitsha and Bokmakierie joined together for a day of fun in a Bokmakierie park on Heritage Day, 24 September 2013.

The event was made possible through a partnership between the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), Islamic Relief, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Sasko, People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) and Bokmakierie Seniors.

Little ones enjoyed face painting, tug of war, mini-cricket, egg and spoon races and three-legged races. Eager teens took to the streets to show their skills in street netball and street soccer. Cheering families and fans added to the festive atmosphere and successful teams were rewarded with medals and trophies.

The day ended with a leisurely over-45 soccer match with participants reliving their former glories on the soccer pitch, much to the amusement of the crowd.

Active community participation with DCAS and its partners showed that sports and fun can bring various communities closer and promote cultural warmth, better together.
