Minister Bredell Congratulates Arbor City Awards Winners

17 September 2013
Statement by Anton Bredell, Provincial Minister for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning

It is with great pleasure that I can confirm that the two leading municipalities in South Africa that were placed first and second in the recent National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries competition are both from the Western Cape, namely Drakenstein, that came first, and Langeberg, that came second.

Among the primary objectives of this competition were related to extending greening in local municipalities to previously disadvantaged areas, ensuring the compliance of greening legislation and raising the awareness of the importance and value of trees in residential settlements. One of the key responsibilities of the programme is the planting of fruit trees as an integral part of food security.

The success achieved by the Drakenstein and Langeberg municipalities is a testimony to the excellent work being done at the municipal level and this is again a well-deserved acknowledgement of their sterling efforts. I would like to express our heartiest congratulations to the mayors, councillors and municipal staff at these municipalities on this fine achievement.
