West Coast Youth Learn Valuable Lessons

9 September 2013

“You must have a choice, the courage to make a commitment and a chance to make a change.” This is how Romano Niemand (17) described what he had learned at the West Coast regional youth camp that took place in Riebeek West from 6 to 8 September 2013.

A total of 84 youth between the ages of 14 and 25 participated in this fun-filled learning event. It was one of a series of youth camps organised by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in partnership with Sport and Recreation South Africa. Through various team activities participants learned to be patient, to be open and honest, to trust each other, and the importance of team work.

Keisha Kortjie (15) said she always struggled to begin a project, but things had changed for her during the camp. She learned planning skills, perseverance, determination, appreciation of the members of her team, and trust in others.

Nathan Mostert (18), who was identified as a youth at risk by the Department of Correctional Services, said that his attitude to life had shifted. He realised the negative impact on society of what he had done, and he intended to make a positive contribution in future.

DCAS West Coast Team Leader Mr Cornelius Malgas encouraged participants to continue to walk a positive path, however long it may seem.  Through the five team names they chose during the camp – Ubuntu, Warriors, Funky Bunkies, Conquerors and Hawks – participants have shown that the young people of the West Coast are ready to make a positive impact in their communities.
