Franschhoek Pass Remains Closed

2 September 2013

Franschhoek Pass remains closed after a mudslide and a small rock fall occurred on 28 August 2013 due to heavy rains in the Western Cape.

During “first light” inspection, the Department of Transport and Public Works came across six more places where mud and rockslides occurred, three of which extended over the barrier line.

The geotechnical specialists from SMEC were called in for an assessment.  Their “off-the-cuff” findings were that the soil above the road is saturated to such a point that any further rain can dislodge some rocks.

A further assessment will be done before a final decision is made.
