Franschhoek Pass Closed After Mudslide

Franschhoek Pass was closed at 19:20 on 28 August 2013 after a mudslide and a small rock fall. 

During “first light” inspection, the Department of Transport and Public Works came across six more places where mud and rockslides occurred, three of which extended over the barrier line. 

The geotechnical specialists from SMEC were called in for an assessment.  Their “off-the-cuff” findings were that the soil above the road is saturated to such a point that any further rain can dislodge some rocks. 

Based on their professional opinion, the department has decided to keep the pass closed until the rain expected on 29 August 2013 has passed. 

A further assessment will be done before a final decision is taken.
