Minister Congratulates Role Players After the Refloating of Kiani Satu

19 August 2013

Statement by Alan Winde, Minister of Finance, Economic Development Tourism

It's a great day for the environment, the Garden Route, for tourism and the province.

A strong and committed team of professionals and volunteers have helped to avert what could have a been a long-term ecological disaster. I'd like to thank the staff of Disaster Management, the South African Maritime Association, the Knysna Municipality, Law Enforcement, CapeNature, the NSRI, Smit Amandla and every other organisation which has played a role in this effort.

These people have worked around the clock since the very beginning to find a solution to this problem. We'll have to clean the oil up on the beach but we'll conduct these mop-up operations with smile, knowing this situation could have been so much worse.
