National Anthem Programme Promotes Common Identity and Pride

About 40 youth artists from six districts in the Western Cape are expected to participate in the National Anthem training programme in Melkbosstrand from 18 to 23 August 2013. The training is facilitated by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and will take place at Melkbos Oppie See Cultural Facility.

Participants were selected after auditions were held across the province to assess vocal technique, music literacy and presentation skills. Mr William Masemola of DCAS Arts and Culture says the National Anthem programme is intended to support social inclusion and build patriotism among people in communities. The programme forms an integral part of DCAS’s efforts to promote and celebrate musical heritage in the country.

During the 2011/2012 financial year, DCAS commissioned Mr Lungile Jacobs, a renowned musician, composer and former member of the Western Cape Cultural Commission, to record the National Anthem and to produce an educational CD toolkit. The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer launched the toolkit at the 2012 Arts Week in Vredenburg.

This programme is a clear example of how DCAS is working better together with communities to support people to sing the national anthem with pride.
