Support Museum to Assist Drakenstein Women’s Clubs

8 August 2013

In celebration of Women’s Month, the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en –monument is organising a collection in aid of two women’s clubs in Drakenstein.

The main purpose of the Buzzy Beez and Dorkas women’s clubs is to empower women to become self-sufficient. They offer weekly training focusing on handicraft and frequently organise soup kitchens in their communities.

The clubs’ wish lists include gas stoves or two-plate electric stoves and big stew pots for their soup kitchen, as well as ingredients for making soup. Donations of fabric, scissors, needles and thread, wool, knitting and crochet needles, beads and ribbon, fabric paint, as well as magazines, particularly handicraft magazines, would be appreciated. Other needs the clubs have expressed include new or second-hand equipment such as a computer and a printer, sewing machines and overlockers, heaters and kettles.

Any member of the public who is willing to make donations is invited to bring these to the museum. They need opportunities to sell their handiwork products in shops and at markets and are also trying to find places in Paarl and Wellington that they can use as club houses.

This initiative demonstrates how the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en –monument is adding value to local communities and making a positive difference in the lives of women and their loved ones.
