Talent identified at Oudtshoorn Sport Festival

26 June 2013

Sport teams representing various sport codes are participating in the Oudtshoorn Sport Festival, taking place from 21 June to 30 June 2013 in this beautiful Klein Karoo town. This Festival, hosted for the 3rd time, is supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), the Oudtshoorn Municipality and the Sport Council.

Over the weekend, hundreds of sport teams competed in various codes – soccer, netball, chess, table tennis, cycling and boxing. The action took place at different venues across the town. The 2013 South African Amateur Kickboxing Association (SAAKA) Championships also formed part of the Festival.

Many athletes who took part in the weekend’s events had a memorable experience, competing against opponents from different regions. Some of them travelled long distances to be at the Festival.

Table tennis athlete Andrico Petro (13) from Vanrhynsdorp said that it was exciting to compete against his opponents. “I don’t always get opportunities to compete at events, so this was truly an amazing experience for me. I made new friends and learnt from their techniques and experiences.”

Siyabonga Madumane from George represented his region in the soccer tournament. “I enjoyed the fun-filled interaction on and off the pitch with my opponents. This brought us together. The event illustrated that everyone can be winners, irrespective of the results,” said Madumane.

This sports tourism event focuses on youth and promotes social development, job creation and transformation. This promotes the aims of the partners to establish the Greater Oudtshoorn as the preferred sport destination of the Southern Cape.

Mr Mandilakhe Matika of the DCAS regional sport office said that the games on the weekend were played in a good spirit and that the partners are committed to ensure that the festival is a celebration of South Africa's status as an active and winning sports nation.
