Tygerberg Hospital Celebrates International Nurses' Day

15 May 2013

Tygerberg Hospital nurses will be honoured for their hard work and dedication on 14 May 2013 as part of the International Nurses’ Day celebrations.

International Nurses’ Day is celebrated annually on 12 May. This year Tygerberg Hospital will host its event on 14 May 2013 to commemorate the sterling work rendered by the dedicated nursing professionals employed in Western Cape Government Health. The theme for 2013 as directed by the International Council of Nursing (ICN) is: Closing the Gap:the Millennium Development Goals 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, says: "Nurses form almost half of our Department’s workforce; therefore the quality of our health service delivery depends largely on nurses. Tygerberg Hospital alone employs 1 957 nurses.

"At present, nurses at Tygerberg Hospital work under very difficult conditions because of the hospital’s deteriorating infrastructure. This is why the reconstruction of Tygerberg Hospital is on the cards. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Tygerberg Hospital nurses for the extraordinary work they do under difficult circumstances."

This is echoed by Ms Martha Conradie, who has been in the nursing profession for 44 years. Said Ms Conradie: "Nursing for me was and is a career of choice. What is rewarding for me is that I can help someone and see the results when a person gets better. My advice to the nursing staff is that you need to have the right attitude and mindset."

Ms Conradie has been working in the High Care Unit at Tygerberg Hospital for more than 20 years.
