Media Alert: New Housing Recipients to Be Welcomed by Minister Madikizela

15 May 2013

The Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela will perform a surprise walk-about and welcome some of the beneficiaries into their new houses in the Nuwe Begin Housing Project in Blue Downs, Cape Town at 10:30 on 15 May 2013.

Houses in the current phase of 294 units have been completed, and the final houses of the phase are being handed over, with beneficiaries currently moving in each day. To qualify as a beneficiary, one needs to be a South African citizen, earn less than R3500 pm, and not have previously received a housing subsidy.

The project will deliver a total of 1 200 fully subsidised Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses. Phase 1 delivered 238 units between 1 June 2012 and 15 June 2012, and the remainder to be delivered by June 2013, with a total project cost of R218 million.

The units include both single and double storey units, and are part of a high density development.

Of the 1 200 available BNG houses, a total of 900 houses have been reserved for the Khayelitsha beneficiaries and 300 for the Greater Blue Downs and Mfuleni beneficiaries. Beneficiaries are drawn from the Bongani and Nkubela areas of Khayelitsha, and Ward 17 and Ward 108 in the Greater Blue Downs and Mfuleni areas. Beneficiaries consist of a large number of flood victims as well as back yard dwellers from these residential areas.

The houses include full underground electricity supply and internal house reticulation, water management devices (WMD) restricting water demand and vibracrete fencing to combat wind erosion and create defined living spaces. The houses were built with 90% local labour and sub contractors.
