Upgraded Netball Facility launched in Moorreesburg

8 May 2013

The support for a “netball revolution” received a boost on Saturday, 4 May 2013 with the launch of upgraded netball courts at Mooreesburg on the West Coast. This was made possible through a partnership between the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), West Coast Netball Union, Swartland Municipality and others.

The President of West Coast Netball, Ms Madelein Horn, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, for his support in achieving this dream and for placing netball on the map.

Officials were given a practical technical course during the launch. This kind of capacity building is one of the deliverables of the DCAS Club Development Programme.

This year all the Union’s games will be taking place at this venue. More professional netball facilities will have a positive impact on the broader community. The number of clubs has grown from 25 to 27 in 2013 and the number of female members is expected to grow from 500 in 2012 to 520 in 2013.

Ms Agnetha Jeftha of the Directorate Sport Promotion said she hopes more netball clubs will be established on the West Coast this year. “If this happens, there will be more players, improving the chances of that many outstanding players will emerge,” she said. The upgraded Mooreesburg netball facilities show the 'netball revolution' in the Western Cape is on track. Through partnerships like this, we can all be "better together".
