DCAS Funding Boosts Boland Sport Federations

30 April 2013

Sport in the Boland received a boost on Wednesday, 24 April 2013 when Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer handed over a total of R704 000 to various sporting federations affiliated to the Boland Sport Council.

Equipment to the value of R36 750 was also handed over to Overstrand Boxing Club, African Youth Boxing and Villiersdorp Boxing.

The funding will go a long way towards providing transport, improving administration, facilitating transformation and sport development and supporting the hosting of various events in the region.

Dr Meyer thanked the federations for the difference they make in their communities. Coaches and athletes from different cultural backgrounds come together through sport and this interaction promotes cultural warmth. The Minister said coaches bring HOPE (Higher Opportunity for People to Excel) to the various parts of the Boland region.

The president of the Boland Sport Council, Mr Pieter Lourens, spoke about the long-standing relationship between the Council and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).

The Department will continue to provide funding to sport councils as part of promoting sport in the Western Cape and encouraging local athletes to push themselves to greater heights. Through investing in our sportsmen and women, DCAS hopes to encourage them to be better together, to reach their goals and to make South Africa proud.
